The Gift of Being Present
What caregiving for a parent taught one woman about love, limits, and what matters most
Karissa spent years as a caregiver for her father.
She describes the experience as one of the most difficult and most meaningful of her life.
Caregiving, she says, is not simply a series of tasks.
It is a relationship — one that asks you to show up fully, repeatedly, even when you are exhausted.
Even when you are afraid.
Even when you do not know what to say.
Karissa learned that presence — simply being there, without an agenda — was often the most important thing she could offer.
Not solutions.
Not answers.
Just presence.
She also learned about limits.
About the importance of asking for help.
About the grief that begins before a person is gone.
And about the love that continues long after.
“Presence — simply being there, without an agenda — was often the most important thing I could offer.”
— Karissa
