My dog does not know what day it is. She does not know what I do for a living, what I am worried about, or what I said to someone last Tuesday that I wish I could take back. She knows I am here.
I have spent thirty years in courtrooms arguing about what is true. I have spent the same thirty years in kitchens with people I love, where truth is a different thing entirely.
People keep telling me that grief gets easier. I am not sure that is the right word. It does not get easier. It gets more familiar. You learn to carry it differently.
Nothing happened today that anyone would write down. I drove somewhere. I ate lunch. I had a conversation I will probably not remember next week. And yet.
I do not think we owe each other happiness. I do not think we owe each other constant availability or perfect understanding. But I think we owe each other the attempt.
