He comes every morning at 5:45. Same machine. Same corner. Same silence. He never speaks to anyone, and no one speaks to him. I have been watching him for a week, the way you watch something without quite knowing why.
This morning I noticed his shoes. They were clean — not new, but carefully cleaned. Someone had taken time with them. Or he had taken time with them himself. Either way, it was a small act of dignity that no one else in that room would ever see.
I thought about all the invisible effort people carry into ordinary places. The way a person can be completely alone in a room full of people and still show up, still lace their shoes, still choose to be present.
I did not speak to him. I am not sure that was the right choice. But I left thinking about him, which is its own kind of connection — the kind that happens without the other person ever knowing.
“There is a kind of courage in showing up to a place where no one knows your name and doing it anyway, every morning, with clean shoes.”
